Blog Proposition

Blog Proposition for Senators Gural and Bachaud
Insurance Coverage for Birth Control,
the Morning after Pill, and Mifepristone

Mifepristone
  • The abortion pill
  • Safe abortion - without dangerous or invasion surgery
Proposition
  • To make available to women with a prescription
  • Women under 18 need parental consent
  • Woman must be within her first trimester of pregnancy to receive the pill
  • Costs of the pill should be covered by health insurance
  • Costs of other forms of birth control, including the morning after pill should be covered by insurance
Reasoning: RU - 486 is a less intrusive procedure than a surgical abortion. It should be available as a safer decision for women who wish to have an abortion. However, it should not be so available that it is passed around as easily aspirin. Restrictions to minors should include parental consent, and all women wishing to receive the pill should get a prescription from their gynecologists, after having received a proper check up. Health insurance should cover all costs of the pill, just as regular check ups are covered. Also, heath insurance should cover birth control and the morning after pill.  All women have a right to health care, and these medications  should be included in that right for any woman wishing to  use them. It is safe and practical and should not be denied, as long as the proper cautions are taken.

  1. So is the purpose of your bill to force insurance companies to cover the cost of this pill? You need to clarify this a bit better. What's the current situation regarding this pill? Is it covered by insurance companies right now?

  2. I really like this. I think that the prescription and parental consent are good ideas that will get you support. The only thing I think you might have trouble with is having the pill covered by insurance, I think its a good idea but you might have trouble individual insurance companies.

  3. I agree that these services should be covered by health insurance, and I like that you include an age when parental consent is necessary. The health of this country's women is our priority, so I like the idea of a pill because it's much, much less dangerous in terms of the mother's health. I do agree with Malinda that it would be tricky getting smaller insurance companies to adhere to this, but I think it's a great idea.

  4. We're making the bill so Medicaid would be required to cover the pills. The gov't can't control independent insurance companies.

...Just in case you read this again.
